QUEEN’S PARK – Despite alarming testimony from senior bureaucrats, Kathleen Wynne will not recover the emails destroyed as part of the Liberal gas plant cover-up, Cambridge PC MPP Rob Leone said today.
“Yesterday, we heard more details about document destruction,” said Leone. “But Kathleen Wynne refuses to tell the people of Ontario when she first learned about this unlawful practice. Now she refuses to restore the destroyed documents so that taxpayers can finally see just how much they are on the hook for. If the documents are indeed irretrievable, she should pick up the phone, call her Liberal friends and demand the answers we’ve been seeking.”
Testifying before MPPs, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner said that the Liberals’ destruction of emails was on such a “massive scale” that it could only have been done with deliberate intent to avoid scrutiny of the gas plant cancellations. Despite this startling information, Kathleen Wynne will not tell us what she knows.
“’New measures’ for new staff aren’t enough,” Leone continued. “The people of Ontario deserve to know how and when she first knew about this behaviour. If there is any way those documents can be recovered, the Premier needs to hand them over.”
“We hear a lot of talk about transparency, but Kathleen Wynne seems determined to avoid telling Ontarians the truth.” Leone concluded. “The people of Ontario deserve better; they deserve an honest government that will lead this province back to prosperity.”
